Today, the 20th day of the Islamic Lunar Month of Safar, coincides with the commemoration and tribute to the Arba’een of our leader and loved one and ‘son’ of the Holy Prophet, Imam Hussein Ibn Ali Ibn Abi Talib (‘a). There are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of articles and books and volumes written about this great Imam and his revolution, so I will come straight to the point of this post and briefly mention the significance of this day.
Imam Hussein’s Grandfather, the Holy Prophet (s’aw) said; “The earth mourns the death of a believer for forty mornings”. (Bihar al-Anwaar)
Mourning Hussein Al-Shaheed (the Martyr) (‘a) is the tradition of all our Imams (a.s), initiated by Imam Ali Ibn al-Hussein (‘a), after returning to Madina from the prison of the child and mother killer Yazid Ibn Mu’awiyah in Damascus. He (Imam Ali) kept distant from the public, so that he could dedicate his time and effort to worship and mourning his beloved father.
This mourning period, according to our traditions, lasts for 40 days, after which this time should not just become a habit that we ‘reenact’ every year, but something that we live with everyday, and with it confirm and AFFIRM our allegiance and support and love to this great Imam and his unique revolution, and all his Infallible family, starting from his Grandfather Muhammad (sa’aw), and ending with the awaited saviour Muhammad (‘a).
Here is the Ziyarah (visitation) specific to this day, the Arba’een of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein Ibn Ali (‘a).
